Season 2 Episode 5: Energy Management for Business Success with Sue Richards

Oct 13, 2026

I am excited to welcome the lovely Sue Richards to the podcast today! Sue is a business mentor who works with female founders stuck in cycles of overwhelm, procrastination, and mental overload.

Sue is also coming into the This Mum Loves Tech Membership on 13th October to deliver an incredible live masterclass called "The Time Lie," where she’ll be busting big myths about traditional time management and showing us how to build businesses around our natural energy instead.

The Unusual Path to Energy-First Mentoring

It was really interesting to discover Sue’s varied background. She is a qualified accountant who left the profession, but still teaches accountancy and tax to her clients, a qualified personal trainer, a nutritionist, and a former wellness coach.

Having hit burnout and closed businesses down twice in the past, Sue knows firsthand that running a business can easily take over your life if you let it. Self-employment isn't the easy route. If we wanted easy, we’d stay as employees. But for so many mums and female entrepreneurs, self-employment gives us the essential flexibility to be there for our families.

To make that flexibility sustainable, Sue brings all those jigsaw pieces together, combining financial eduction with health and energy management, to help women build thriving businesses without burning out.

Why Time Management Is "The Time Lie"

So many of us fall into the trap of trying to fill every single minute of the school run window. If you have 5.5 hours between 9:30 AM and 3:00 PM, the temptation is to squash as many tasks as possible into that block without thinking about your energy.

The thing is, women don't have the same 24-hour hormonal cycle every day. Trying to follow a rigid blueprint designed for someone else (or forcing high-focus creative work when your brain is depleted) leaves you feeling exhausted at 3:00 PM like you’ve achieved nothing.

Sue shared that true sustainable success comes from balancing three things:

  • Boundaries: Protecting your headspace and energy.
  • Structure: Having clear systems to keep you moving forward.
  • Flexibility: Giving yourself permission to flex your schedule during school holidays, end-of-term chaos, or low-energy days.

Doing What Works for YOU

Sue recently made the decision to step back from posting on social media because it was sapping her energy without bringing in direct leads. Instead, she focuses on podcasts, guest masterclasses, her email list on MailerLite, and building genuine connections.

That is such a powerful message for all of us: stop trying to force yourself into someone else's mould. Whether it's choosing to work late as a night owl, taking a yoga break in the middle of your workday, or keeping your tech simple with Google Drive, you get to design a business that supports your life, not the other way around.
