How TechPixies Helped Me Find Confidence and Direction

In this week’s episode of This Mum Loves Tech, I’m joined by Joy Foster, founder of TechPixies, for an inspiring conversation about confidence, visibility and overcoming perfectionism in business.

TechPixies holds a very special place in my own story. When I first discovered Joy’s free Social Media Bootcamp, I was between jobs after having my eldest and had decided not to return to my children’s book design job in London. That bootcamp opened my eyes to a whole new world and I went on to become CPD certified in Social Media Management through the TechPixies programme.

That course gave me the confidence to take the next step in my career and opened doors I hadn’t even imagined possible.

A little later, I joined Joy’s DreamBuilder programme, at a time when I was struggling to move forward personally. I couldn’t get pregnant and couldn’t see past anything else. DreamBuilder helped me reconnect with a bigger vision for my life and the month after joining, I found out I was pregnant.

Fast forward to today, and I’ve come full circle. I’m now one of the trainers on TechPixies’ Business Beyond Social programme, helping women build their confidence with tech, just like Joy helped me.

TechPixies was the starting point for so much of what This Mum Loves Tech has become, and I’m incredibly proud to now support other women on their own journeys.

Building Confidence Through Social Media

Joy and I talked about how social media can be the first step towards rebuilding confidence. For many women returning to work or starting a business, learning these skills isn’t just about marketing it’s about rediscovering their voice and who they are.

“One of the things I found early on was that if I taught women how to use social media, their confidence would go up, because in order to go on social media, you have to take off your invisibility cloak.”

Joy shared how TechPixies started as a social media training course but quickly evolved into something much more powerful. As women began to show up online, they also began to dream bigger, set new goals, and build businesses aligned with their passions.

Overcoming Perfectionism and Finding Momentum

A huge part of Joy’s message is about letting go of perfectionism; it’s from Joy I learnt my favourite saying “Done is better than perfect!”. We discussed how striving to make everything perfect can actually stop you from moving forward and why progress is where the magic happens.

“Done not perfect just means get it done. Then you can perfect it later. There’s freedom that comes from that. There’s energy that comes from that. It’s momentum.”

That message has stuck with me ever since I first heard it and one I pass on to all my clients to help them move forward.

Redefining Failure and Fear

Joy also shared one of her most powerful mindset shifts, learning to see failure in a completely different light. She explained how redefining failure as learning allows you to move forward faster, with less fear and more curiosity. Rather than seeing mistakes as setbacks, she encourages women to “fail fast, learn fast and iterate fast,” using each experience as valuable feedback.

We also talked about the fine line between fear of failure and fear of success, and how recognising which one is actually holding you back can make all the difference in taking your next step with confidence.

Protecting Your Energy and Building Longevity

Running a business is a marathon, not a sprint, and Joy emphasised how protecting your energy is key to creating sustainable success.

When you understand how to use the right tech tools, and balance that with strong mindset work, you set yourself up for long-term growth.

We both shared how empowering it is when you use tech intentionally. It’s not about doing more, but about making space for what matters.

This includes closing the social media apps and how you can be present but not on them all the time.
