What Is a Tech Stack? (And Why You Probably Already Have One Without Realising It)

by | Jul 1, 2025

You started your business because you had an idea, a talent, or a passion you wanted to share. Maybe it was a product you loved creating, or a service that genuinely helps people. But before you knew it, you were knee-deep in tools, platforms, apps, and subscriptions, most of which you didn’t even know you needed.

If you’re running a business online, tech becomes part of your everyday life. Whether you’re sending emails, posting on social media, setting up client calls, or selling your offers, you’re using tech to make it all happen.

Sound familiar?

Here’s the thing:
If you run an online business, you already have a tech stack.

So… what is a tech stack?

Put simply, your tech stack is the collection of digital tools, software, apps, and platforms you use to run your business. It’s everything working in the background to keep things ticking over – from your payment processor to your content creation tools and everything in between.

Think of it like a recipe. Your ingredients might include a website, an email marketing platform, a calendar tool, a payment system, and a cloud storage solution. Everyone’s recipe will look a little bit different depending on what you offer and how you work, and that’s completely normal. Your tech stack doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to work for you.

When your tech stack is well thought out and connected, it can make your business run more efficiently, give your clients a smoother experience, and free up your time to focus on the things you actually enjoy. But when it’s built on a bit of guesswork, which, let’s be honest, most of us start out with, it can leave you feeling overwhelmed, over-subscribed, and unsure of what’s actually helping or hindering your progress.

Why your tech stack matters

Understanding what’s in your tech stack isn’t just for “techy” people. It’s something every online business owner needs to get to grips with, especially if you want to grow without burning out.

When you take a step back and really look at the tools you’re using, you’ll often find a mix of things:

  • A few tools you love and use all the time
  • A couple you’re paying for but barely touch
  • Tools that actually do a similar or even the same job as another in your stack
  • And probably one or two gaps where a small change could save you hours every week

The truth is, the right tech stack can help you make more money and get back more time. It can simplify your processes, help you show up more consistently, and make your business feel a lot less stressful behind the scenes.

You don’t need all the tools. Just the right ones.

It’s not about having the fanciest or most expensive tech.

It’s about choosing the tools that do the job, in a way that works for your time, your budget, and your business stage.

And most importantly, it’s about putting those tools together in a way that’s simple, manageable, and sustainable.

You don’t need to use everything out there. You just need to choose the tools that suit your business, your budget, your schedule, and the way you like to work.

Want to get a clearer picture of your tech stack?

If you’re reading this and thinking, “I’m not even sure what tools I’ve got, let alone if they’re working well together…” you’re not alone. Most business owners don’t build their tech stack intentionally, it just sort of evolves over time. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take back control.
