Why You’re Not Starting Your Email List and Why It’s All Lies

If you’ve ever said, “I don’t want to be spammy,” or “The tech makes my brain hurt,” then this episode of This Mum Loves Tech is for you.

In the third instalment of my four-part email marketing series, I’m tackling the biggest myths I hear every day from business owners who are still avoiding their email list. The truth? These myths are holding you back from using one of the most powerful tools available for your business.

It’s time to stop letting fear, doubt, and tech overwhelm keep you from building connections and making sales in your sleep.

Myth 1: “I Don’t Want to Be Spammy”

Let’s be clear: spam is when someone sends you irrelevant emails you never signed up for. Email marketing, when done right, is the exact opposite.

“With email marketing, people choose to sign up for your emails… and that’s powerful.”

You’re not showing up uninvited, you’re landing in inboxes of people who’ve said “Yes please, I want to hear from you.”

And if they ever change their mind? They can unsubscribe with one click. That’s permission-based marketing at its best.

Myth 2: “I’ve Got Nothing Valuable to Say”

Spoiler alert: yes, you do. If you’re posting on social media, answering client questions, or sharing tips in your Facebook group, you already have content for your emails.

“We are the only ones that see all of our content. Once you realise that, sending emails becomes so much easier.”

Repurposing is your best friend. That Instagram caption? Make it an email. That podcast episode? Summarise it in your next newsletter. You don’t need brand-new ideas every time, you just need to stay visible and consistent.

Myth 3: “I Don’t Know What to Put in a Newsletter”

Email marketing isn’t just about newsletters. It’s your entire communication system.

  • New Client onboarding
  • Client follow-ups
  • Product delivery
  • Masterclass reminders
  • New podcast episodes
  • Launch announcements

In fact, everything from welcoming new members to sending Zoom links happens automatically in my business thanks to email automations.

And yes, you can absolutely do this too.

Myth 4: “The Tech Is Overwhelming”

This is one I hear a lot, and honestly, I get it. At first glance, email marketing tech can seem really overwhelming. But here’s the truth: once you understand how the tech works, it becomes a repeatable skill you can use again and again.

Once you have the background tech setup you can reuse what you’ve already built, copy templates, tweak automations, and keep improving. Understanding the tech is a long-term investment in your business growth.

You don’t need to master it all overnight, but the quicker you learn the basics, the more confident and empowered you’ll feel.

And remember: you don’t have to figure it out on your own. Asking for help is a smart business decision. Whether that’s Googling tutorials, getting tech support, or learning from someone who’s already done it, support is out there.

That’s exactly why I created my course, Launch Your Lead Magnet Using MailerLite course to take the tech stress off your plate and walk you through everything step by step.

Over the 6 modules and 12 LIVE Group Zoom calls, we cover:

  • Setting up your MailerLite account properly so your emails actually land in inboxes
  • Creating a lead magnet that your audience genuinely wants
  • Automating your welcome sequence so it runs while you sleep
  • Building a simple funnel that grows your list and builds trust

One of my lovely students, Sarah-Jane Adams, said in her podcast episode just last week (epiosde 15) that learning email marketing completely changed her approach to business.

You don’t need to do it alone and you don’t need to put it off because of the tech.

Myth 5: “My Business Isn’t Ready”

Many business owners think they need to be more established before they start an email list. But actually, your email list is what helps you become established.

Whether you’ve got a full client roster or you’re just starting out, having a way to collect leads and nurture relationships puts you in a position of power.

“I didn’t have time to be constant with my social media. But I knew if I could be constant with my emails, that would serve me so much better in the long run… You really don’t need to have hundreds of people on your email list or thousands of followers to make an impact. With email marketing, you just need the right people who are ready to hear from you, and ready to buy from you.”

You don’t need hundreds of subscribers, you just need the right people on your list who want to hear from you.
