For women who are business owners, health is something that often gets pushed to the bottom of the list. When you’re running a business alongside family life, health can easily become something you “get back to later”.
In this episode of This Mum Loves Tech, I’m joined by women’s health coach Lesley Waldron to talk about why supporting your health while running a business is essential, and how building a personal health toolkit can help prevent burnout, especially through perimenopause and menopause.
Lesley brings a calm, realistic approach to women’s health for business owners, focusing on sustainability rather than perfection.
Why Women Aren’t Meant to Operate at the Same Pace Every Day
One of the biggest frustrations Lesley sees in her work is women feeling like something is wrong with them because their energy isn’t consistent.
She explained that fluctuating energy, focus and motivation are normal, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, yet many women try to push through as if nothing has changed.
“We don’t actually have to be the same all of the time. Our energy shifts and changes, and that’s normal.”
Understanding this can be a huge relief for business owners who have been blaming themselves for not being able to operate at full capacity every day.
Why One-Size-Fits-All Health Advice Leads to Burnout
We also talked about why generic health advice often doesn’t work for business owners.
Lesley shared that many women come to her already exhausted, having tried to follow routines that simply don’t fit their lives, their hormones, or their responsibilities.
“The toolkit that worked for you in your twenties or thirties might not work anymore, and that’s okay.”
For women’s health for business owners, flexibility matters. What supports you during a busy launch, a school holiday, or a hormonal shift may look very different month to month.
Progress Isn’t Linear and That Isn’t Failure
Another powerful part of the conversation was around how we define progress.
Lesley explained that many women give up on routines or habits because they feel like they’ve “failed” if they can’t keep them going perfectly.
“Progress is a series of spirals rather than a straight line.”
Having a personal health toolkit means you always have something to return to, rather than starting again from scratch every time life gets busy.
Building a Health Toolkit That Fits Real Life
Rather than rigid plans, Lesley encourages women to build a toolkit of supportive habits they can draw on when needed.
This might include movement that feels good, better sleep boundaries, nourishment, stress management, or simply permission to slow down.
This approach to women’s health for business owners mirrors how we think about tech in business. The goal isn’t to do everything. It’s to have the right tools in place to support you through different seasons.
Why Supporting Your Health Supports Your Business
Supporting your health while running a business isn’t just about feeling better day to day. It affects decision-making, confidence, creativity and your ability to show up consistently.
When health is neglected, burnout becomes much more likely. When health is supported, everything else becomes easier to manage.
