Google Analytics and Search Console Simplified: The SEO Foundations Every Small Business Needs
If you’ve ever opened Google Analytics or Google Search Console and immediately closed the tab again, this episode is absolutely for you. I’m joined by the brilliant Suzy Stanton from Wish Freelance Writing, who specialises in making SEO feel simple, doable and completely non-intimidating.
SEO is one of those topics that instantly makes so many small business owners panic, but Suzy Stanton is on a mission to change that. What I love about Suzy’s story is that she learned it all the way most of us do… through trial, error and shouting at Yoast when it told her she had “no headings”. She didn’t come from a tech or marketing background. She was a civil service lawyer for 20 years, launched a digital magazine and quickly realised no one would find it without SEO.
Her journey is such a relatable reminder that you don’t have to be a tech expert to improve your SEO. You just need to understand the basics.
The Big Visibility Shift: “SEO Works While You’re Not Working”
One of the most powerful parts of the conversation is when Suzy explains the difference SEO makes to her magazine now compared to when she launched it. She shared that even during the summer holidays when she wasn’t publishing anything new, she was still getting around 1,800 views a month, all thanks to having her SEO foundations in place.
As Suzy says, unlike social media which disappears quickly, SEO becomes a slow and steady engine working away in the background long after you’ve closed your laptop.
Understanding Google Analytics & Search Console (Without the Tech Overwhelm)
Suzy delivered an incredible masterclass inside the membership called Google Analytics & Search Console Simplified, and in the episode she shares exactly why these tools matter for every business owner.
- Google Analytics shows you how people are finding your website, what content they’re reading and what keywords are performing well.
- Google Search Console confirms that your site is actually on Google’s list and reveals the exact search terms people type that lead them to you.
Together they help you understand what’s working, what’s not and what opportunities you might be missing, all without needing to learn anything complicated.
The Biggest SEO Mistake Small Business Owners Make
One of my favourite moments is when Suzy explains the single biggest mistake she sees small business owners make:
They don’t start.
And it’s usually because they think it’s too complicated or too big of a job.
But as Suzy says, you don’t need a whole week to fix your SEO.
Twenty minutes, two or three times a week, can make a huge difference.
She recommends starting with one simple action…
Make a list of five words that describe what you do and ensure your top one appears in your website tagline. If Google can’t see it, Google doesn’t know what your site is about.
Why You Must Have Access to Your Own Website
We also talked about something I talk about all the time, there is no point having a beautifully designed website with zero SEO behind them because you doesn’t know how to log in, edit it or access the back end. Suzy’s right: if Google can’t read the essentials, your website simply won’t be found.
Your website is your online home. You own it. And SEO is what unlocks the front door for your dream customers.
