From Publishing to Tech Powerhouse: The Story of This Mum Loves Tech

My journey to creating This Mum Loves Tech wasn’t planned, but like many mums, it began with having my first son in 2018. Before becoming a mum, I was set on returning to my career in children’s publishing, where I loved working on beautiful books for babies and children. But after my son arrived, everything shifted. The thought of long train commutes and limited family time made me question what I wanted my life to look like.

In this post, I’ll share my story of moving from a secure publishing career to starting my own business, the challenges I faced, and how This Mum Loves Tech became my way of helping others navigate the tech side of running a business.

Deciding Not to Return: A Tough Call
The decision to leave my job was not easy. I loved the people I worked with and the projects I contributed to, but I knew something had to change. Before remote working was common, flexible options just didn’t exist. So, I made the tough decision to prioritise my family and look for new opportunities closer to home.

What followed was a period of rediscovery. I started working with small local companies, using my graphic design skills. But these roles required me to expand into digital design, websites, and social media—areas I hadn’t worked in before. It was clear I needed to upskill.

Upskilling and Finding Confidence
The first step in my new journey was learning. I signed up for my first course, a social media training programme with Tech Pixies. This wasn’t just about understanding platforms like Instagram and Pinterest; it also involved working on my mindset.

At the time, my confidence in my abilities was at an all-time low. Despite 12 years of experience, I felt limited by not having a degree, which many job listings demanded. The Tech Pixies course helped me rebuild my confidence and develop skills I could use to help others.

The Covid-19 Catalyst: Building a Business from Scratch
When Covid-19 hit, I was furloughed and had more time at home. This unexpected pause gave me the opportunity to reflect. After losing my part-time job when the company didn’t survive the pandemic, I started dabbling with the idea of running my own business.

In 2021, I officially launched This Mum Loves Tech, focusing initially on social media management. While juggling part-time work and parenting, I slowly began building a business that could adapt to my family’s needs.

Why Flexibility Matters: The Turning Point
After having my second son in 2022, balancing work and family became even more challenging. My eldest started school and was frequently unwell during his first term, making me realise the inflexibility of traditional roles.

My husband and I had a heart-to-heart and decided to give my business six months to grow. It wasn’t an easy start, but I knew I had to define my services and messaging better. By focusing on what I loved—simplifying tech for small business owners—I began finding my groove.

The Birth of This Mum Loves Tech
Over time, I discovered a superpower: taking complex tech tools and breaking them down into simple, actionable steps. Whether it was setting up Google Workspace or helping with email marketing platforms, I realised I could make tech less intimidating for others.

In 2024, I launched The This Mum Loves Tech Community on Facebook, offering free monthly masterclasses to help fellow business owners navigate tech. This eventually grew into a membership programme, where I now teach and support 40+ members with tech solutions that help them grow their businesses.

Lessons Learned: What I’d Tell My Past Self

  1. Start Before You’re Ready: You don’t need everything figured out to begin. I started small, building my skills and services as I went.
  2. Focus on What You Love: Tech has always come naturally to me, and leaning into this passion has been the key to my success.
  3. Community Matters: Creating a supportive space like my Facebook group has been a game-changer for connecting with others and building trust.
