When you run your own business, sales can feel like one of the scariest parts. I know so many women who love what they do but freeze up when it comes to selling it. That’s why I invited sales strategist Lixxy Harkcom onto the podcast for this episode.

Lixxy has over 15 years’ experience in sales, from call centres to big corporate deals, and now helps small business owners simplify the whole process. Her approach is refreshing:

“Sales is just talking to people about what you do and how it helps. We tend to overcomplicate it, and that’s what makes it feel scary.”

Why We Overcomplicate Sales

Lixxy and I talked about how sales often gets built up in our heads into something intimidating. We imagine scripts, hard sells, and awkward pitches. But in reality, it’s about conversations and relationships.

She compared it to dating, nobody would propose marriage on a first date, so why do we expect to make sales with a cold DM? Instead, it’s about building trust and warming people up over time.

Sales Without Social Media

Something I found so encouraging is that Lixxy has stepped back from social media and yet is busier than ever. It’s proof that sales doesn’t have to mean constant posting. Instead, she focuses on building relationships, following up with leads, and using email.

This is such a relief if you’re someone who finds social media draining. Sales can come from many different channels, it doesn’t all have to be Instagram posts.

Building a Sales Pipeline

One of Lixxy’s biggest tips was to think long-term. Instead of chasing the sale you need today, start building a pipeline of conversations that will pay off next month, or even next quarter. That way, you’re not constantly scrambling for new clients.

This is especially important as we head into the busiest sales season of the year—Black Friday and Christmas. The sales you make then won’t come from strangers. They’ll come from the leads you’ve already nurtured now.
